How to use HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl)

Using heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is a popular method for customizing t-shirts, hats, and other fabric items. Here's how to use heat transfer vinyl:

  1. Create your design on a computer or with a stencil. Flip the design horizontally so that it's reversed, as the vinyl will be applied face down and flipped over later.

  2. Cut your HTV design using a vinyl cutter or craft cutter. Make sure to mirror the design so that it's reversed.

  3. Preheat your heat press to the recommended temperature for your HTV material. If you're using an iron, set it to the appropriate temperature for your material and turn off the steam function.

  4. Pre-press the fabric to remove any moisture and wrinkles. This step is especially important for new or freshly laundered fabrics.

  5. Place the HTV design onto the fabric with the vinyl side facing down. Make sure to align it correctly and use a ruler or other straight edge to ensure it's straight.

  6. Apply heat to the HTV using a heat press or an iron. For a heat press, apply firm pressure for the recommended time (usually 10-20 seconds) and then release the press. For an iron, apply firm pressure for 10-15 seconds, making sure to apply heat evenly over the design.

  7. Let the HTV cool down before peeling off the carrier sheet. Peel the carrier sheet off the design at a sharp angle, making sure not to pull the HTV off the fabric.

  8. If necessary, repeat the process to apply additional layers of HTV or to touch up areas where the vinyl may not have adhered properly.

  9. Once the design is fully applied, you can wear and enjoy your custom HTV creation!

Remember to follow the instructions for your specific HTV material, as the temperature and pressure settings may vary. With a little practice and patience, you can create unique, customized fabric items using heat transfer vinyl.
